Complementry events

Sorry about having this post up a bit late but when i came down in fifth block the resource centre was closed. Mostly all we did on Friday was get some more examples on the board for probability and scramble to get as many accelerated math objectives done as possible.

classifying comics

Well having missed almost two weeks of school and finding out that it was my turn to be scribe first day back didn't exactly fill me with a nice bubbly feeling but instead a sense of dread of not knowing what was going on. So if this post isn't great I am sorry and I'll encourage anyone to add comments to try and correct it.

Well after the start of class and learning the rules for 4 conics the circle, ellipse, hyperbola, and parabola ( don't forget that a parabola can open up, down, right, or left) we then went on to how to go from general form to standard form which is basically working to simplify the equations to their simplest form.

and finally after a week away from class this here sums up how almost everything sounds.

Work Day

Today in class we got to try and catch up on accelerated math as well as try and get as many extra points on the log test we got back today. I don't know about the rest of the class but for me this was a huge relief though Anna's idea to go for ice cream in class also would have been a good idea. I would also like to remind everyone that thirty objectives are due for Friday. Good luck everyone.

Logarithm Laws

Greeting peers today in Mr. Max's dictatorship, I mean class, he started by trying to recruit more students for the national math competition on April 15.

After this largely unsuccessful attempt we dived head long into logarithm laws which are largely based on rules for exponents that we already should know.

Exercise 22 1-14 was assigned and don't forget about the 19 accelerated math objectives due on thursday

identities sum and differences

Ok now being only a couple days late for this due to some technacal difficulties with logging on to blogger for some reason i can now conribute my wise learnings, I keep trying to tell myself this anyways, in the form of two examples.

So hear is exhibit A using the identity Cos(a+b):

= Cos(A)* Cos(B) -Sin(A)*Sin(B)

= Cos(5x)*Cos(2x)-Sin(5x)*Sin(2x)

= Cos(5x+2x)

= Cos(7x)

And now for exhibit B which is like A in reverse and more specific:
Cos(75 degrees)
= Cos(45 degrees+ 30 degrees)
= Cos(45)*Cos(30)-Sin(45)*Sin(30)
= (sqr(2)/2) * (sqr(3)/2) - (Sqr(2)/2) * 1/2
= (sqr(6)/4) - (sqr(2)/4)
= (sqr(6)-sqr(2))/4

Well hope this helps someone

March 7th

Well today with our HUGE class we basically got to have a free day to catch up on assignements and to work on acceleratd math to try and meet the upcoming deadline. So.... basically the day was a repeat of thursday.

And here is a nice little pic that reminds me of Mr.Maksymchuk's explination of what tests are like.

Graphing Trigonometric Functions

On Thursday, Feb.21st The class was started by a mental math, Followed by the test written the previous day being handed back with the answer key. With many moans in the air after seeing the test results Mr. Maksymchuck quickly moved on to cover the next lesson, Graphing Functions. Also An important reminder from now on.....RADIANS ARE NOW THE DEFAULT FOR GRAPHS.

Next came Reference Curves with a " how-to" lesson in putting the six trig functions into a calculator or other technological device as shown by the image below. Sec and cot are done like csc meaning sec is (y= 1/cos theta) and cot is (y= 1/tan theta). The definition of Asymptote given on the slide below is also very important to know

Then was a bit Review with the definitions of Domain( the values that x can be) and Range ( the values that y can be)

Next was the actual graphing of the functions on graphmatica and ow it can relate to the unit circle i.e Y=sin(x) is greatest at π/2 on the graph and is positive up until π, which is equivalent to quadrants I and II on the unit circle. The image below was handed out in class and has all he functions on the same graph.

The parabola's are formed by the csc and sec graph's and they touch the greatest value of there corresponding function i.e sec touches sin's greatest values. Also the mostly vertical lines are the remaining function tan and cot with tan being the lines bending to the right going from bottom to top and cot being a mirror image of tan.

Then the class was then introduced /reminded of definitions and formulas for them which are on the slides below. Then at the end of class we were assigned questions 1-15 on exercise 5 and 1-16 on exercise 6. The image to the side was also handed out.

Goal-setting for this semester's class

My goals for this semester in this class is to acheive at least a 85%. I also have decided to try and study more for the tsets in this class than i have for previous math courses.

When looking on the net I also found http://us.geocities.com/ojjk/ which offers definitions, formulas, and a quiz at the end of each unit that is given. It is from this sight that i got this image of a coscant graph above.

Hope this helps someone,
Luke
