Sorry for the inconvenience but last week we didn't really learn anything new anyway. So anyways here's what I had typed up.......</em><br /><br />Well hello.. Its only four more days until the math exam and I wish everyone luck. Today was another work/study period where we got to work on whatever you figured you need to perfect before the exam. We got a chance to complete our review exercises up to 50 and also finish accelerated math.<br /><br />Since the exam is so near we didn't learn anyting new so instead here's a joke to lighten the mood..<br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;">Top ln(e^10) reasons why e is better than pi </span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">10) e is easier to spell than pi.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">9) pi ~= 3.14 while e ~=2.718281828459045.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">8) The character for e can be found on a keyboard, but pi sure can't.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">7) Everybody fights for their piece of the pie.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">6) ln(pi^1) is a really nasty number, but ln(e^1) = 1.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">5) e is used in calculus while pi is used in baby geometry.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">4) 'e' is the most commonly picked vowel in Wheel of Fortune.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">3) e stands for Euler's Number, pi doesn't stand for squat.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">2) You don't need to know Greek to be able to use e.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">1) You can't confuse e with a food product.</span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;"></span><br /><span style="color:#33ff33;">One day a mathematician decides that he is sick of math. So, he walks down to the fire department and announces that he wants to become a fireman. The fire chief says, "Well, you look like a good guy. I'd be glad to hire you, but first I have to give you a little test."<br />The firechief takes the mathematcian to the alley behind the fire department which contains a dumpster, a spigot, and a hose. The chief then says, "OK, you're walking in the alley and you see the dumpster here is on fire. What do you do?" The mathematician replies, "Well, I hook up the hose to the spigot, turn the water on, and put out the fire."<br />The chief says, "That's great... perfect. Now I have to ask you just one more question. What do you do if you're walking down the alley and you see the dumpster is not on fire?" The mathematician puzzles over the question for awhile and he finally says, "I light the dumpster on fire."The chief yells, "What? That's horrible! Why would you light the dumpster on fire?" The mathematician replies, "Well, that way I reduce the problem to one I've already solved."</span><br /><span style="color:#33ff33;"></span><br /><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Jokes From </span><a href="http://www.workjoke.com/projoke22.htm"><span style="font-size:85%;">http://www.workjoke.com/projoke22.htm</span></a></span><br /><br /><span style="color:#000000;">Thanks, </span><br /><br /><br />Gregoirgregoirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05830420214608882805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8106312417729952201.post-24050490201483337822008-06-04T13:09:00.005-05:002008-06-04T14:07:04.312-05:00More Exam ReviewHere's the example study sheet Mr. Max gave us a few days ago. To gain more assignment marks, we have the option to make 8 of these (one for each unit) or study sheets of some sort for Friday. Basically the idea is to go through each learning outcome (from the Manitoba curriculum sheet) and put examples or references to examples. If you know you are well-versed in that particular outcome, you can put a check mark or some such symbol.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSfgswBXaTfG4Okwtzk6RjOT1oGhy8O54OtFSqSrMVM-5kmHJgytev0TCdOo_jzy7g-fdo7fqK5tRvrY3nhZLbGpLtDnMUByPVBr1vdP0aWBYZ87aGECGPyrPc3gc_iVVT1Diqfw90Bv99/s1600-h/pc40june0208studysheets_1.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208092276488733650" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSfgswBXaTfG4Okwtzk6RjOT1oGhy8O54OtFSqSrMVM-5kmHJgytev0TCdOo_jzy7g-fdo7fqK5tRvrY3nhZLbGpLtDnMUByPVBr1vdP0aWBYZ87aGECGPyrPc3gc_iVVT1Diqfw90Bv99/s400/pc40june0208studysheets_1.png" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZsK8KQSy6a5H8JAzPgjsGqDiRKf1olS8d34rkXlN1EE0Ju1wzWW2SWFTH59a5XRDLTUjwU6eL8QRQnrFA2wQaSpCNsEQ9H-GFU2dIHMETWSEdo-V91L-FYe0ZUAnDpN1h58Ryt3_BDD1Z/s1600-h/pc40june0208studysheets_2.png"></a><br />Class today was more preparation for the exam. There will be a deadline for all accelerated math to be done though so keep working hard on it..</div><br /><div>After hearing that good news, Mr Max continued into a new unit of Geometric Sequences. First of all he described to us what a geometric sequence was. He did this by explaining what they were recursively and explicitly.. see the below slide for more info</div><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205067230806439474" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhONdsdIv7pShATjaTlO3LiAmeTHWZaymHP0ymjeVKedoxoVM3T1ozpwBYzyKGvG9eisQ9Y_0w-4XaX7-MMvkz428vuCuMCZXZaQtbto8Lzk5jgUDUWAAQIXH5cadsUuH3ZVbHso7BYbPg/s320/pc40may2608geometricsequencesintro_2.png" border="0" />If this doesn't make sense to you.. it is just that a geometric sequence is a line of numbers that are generated by multiplying the previous number by a common ratio. For example, take a gander at the slide below and it should help you out.</div><br /><p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205065358200698370" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAhjYOZ3nGh2hZJSljtoM312T3O5cllpIgi_WWUK7ZemUWk4w9SE-LCjVcM9qkqv8jfp0-44D1Za8YTpku8EP3C88yldPUzPL0Yt7fflrFQzWd64UikrW7pZh3EhFiCqyw40C8U8tS5X8/s320/pc40may2608geometricsequencesintro_3.png" border="0" />By this time in my post I am starting to become extremely irritable because stupid blogger doesn't put my pictures where I want them.. or in the right order.</p><p>Anyways, the next three slides are perfect examples of what the formulas are, what each variable means, how formulas are used to find each term in a geometric sequence, or how to find the rate at which you are multiplying them.</p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205066565086508562" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPaA72D6WZIUV0PSkDimTjO3fuHbCwGdlrpbMvN6JYlcxc50CI4HCDBCVB1qWbCXx8F5EV2d3OPKTVD8Eo3Qjm4STwlOcbM3L5wLH6VwQim3bmEmTzPk3ycWoS7HZA4gF4YZ_OR_48WgU/s320/pc40may2608geometricsequencesintro_4.png" border="0" /> <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205066835669448226" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_kWMFKe5dMrwpqGfvf0RolzVorqCMOgk_oti4D42038CVCX0PRH44NhagxW6CxjKsyoqvRRscMsJlvTvumesVXYTa_70yc_4NqZm_FKgiVT4AzNngKuhaeCFpuIjqoo_UEGrYhvrVC9A/s320/pc40may2608geometricsequencesintro_5.png" border="0" /><br /></div></div></div></div><p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205067647418267202" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqVvGtH1mD86BI8kgYyV_Ysf4m9E0PhD_ZemYzISJ4tV1eW36NKbfxor5A14G-TzztCYxO3Y0fYLQ8oz7UoVQ58DQKoBOp21N1UXZ1Y59NWQ1dc_LuEV_UbgD1MpFjXGdNpsea8nBMKwA/s320/pc40may2608geometricsequencesintro_6.png" border="0" />Below are three more slides of how to use the formulas that are given, in the proper way. First off I hope everyone had an enjoyable long weekend and I also hope the Rugby girls that missed today are having fun <em>kicking butt</em>.<br /><br />So we began todays class by making a schedule for the rest of the classes leading up to the exam. Not a whole lot of learnin left until we begin review.. Time flies! Anyway the calender below shows what we have left and that we will still be having a test three days before the exam and hopefully 5 days of review can be squeezed in.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk-SGfhWQZL3XmhQLoKV2pg5OSKpRdTldHwaSV0h5z6dS62DWtD31wahUCVgGm7b1wk3QVbD9I1hTzzri3E1ar5ZCKpRJEFHA9W8ncs1o986J_WEdLd-wR4IMjvXMt8vdeW0iHosrusPf4/s1600-h/pc40may2008moreprobabilityquestions_1.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202556613330528434" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk-SGfhWQZL3XmhQLoKV2pg5OSKpRdTldHwaSV0h5z6dS62DWtD31wahUCVgGm7b1wk3QVbD9I1hTzzri3E1ar5ZCKpRJEFHA9W8ncs1o986J_WEdLd-wR4IMjvXMt8vdeW0iHosrusPf4/s400/pc40may2008moreprobabilityquestions_1.png" border="0" /></a> <span style="font-size:85%;color:#33ff33;">Remember... No excuses.. I forgot. On Friday we learned about hyperbola's. Mr. Max was teaching us the standard equations for hyperbolas and what exactly they look like.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglTckwU-0Axd5fbVD5OmgWbLJh86OxhKgeq-w5M6VeTN2IYPdvbwsNqsGnzqWi1ymfwSRBMXSAY6n3h39ZA5Zq2s3V5M9Ez8Vy0PkhflLIXNPBq4AA3TqMl1Bd4j8JOAR7CaJ-oZ01BLc/s1600-h/pc40may0908hyperbolaexamples_1.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198452974939396370" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglTckwU-0Axd5fbVD5OmgWbLJh86OxhKgeq-w5M6VeTN2IYPdvbwsNqsGnzqWi1ymfwSRBMXSAY6n3h39ZA5Zq2s3V5M9Ez8Vy0PkhflLIXNPBq4AA3TqMl1Bd4j8JOAR7CaJ-oZ01BLc/s400/pc40may0908hyperbolaexamples_1.png" border="0" /></a> Above we examined how to simplify the equations in order to find the values of A and B. Also known as the major axis and the minor axis. Once given the values of A and B you can also input the Domain and Range.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOuWvxkkb2b2mzBNPgSQIUz9Xmjhz4y_Yu7ykQMdWvd0ZKiqGxDApNZpI8uN8eJ-B5V2bN_-VJh6Z8_UqGYliymYIJBIEbL3nmHtHmBlNBOMnkntEkUQt_qSlEXivJH6gru4VF_ENqchA/s1600-h/pc40may0908hyperbolaexamples_2.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198453052248807714" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOuWvxkkb2b2mzBNPgSQIUz9Xmjhz4y_Yu7ykQMdWvd0ZKiqGxDApNZpI8uN8eJ-B5V2bN_-VJh6Z8_UqGYliymYIJBIEbL3nmHtHmBlNBOMnkntEkUQt_qSlEXivJH6gru4VF_ENqchA/s400/pc40may0908hyperbolaexamples_2.png" border="0" /></a> As Mr. Max said... some people may be able to just "eyeball" the graph of this hyperbola and be able to figure out what the equation for the asymptotes are. Remember to study hard for the test thursday and that around 57 accelerated math bjectives are due next. Keep working hard. Only one more month!!Dantonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01089553575512082599noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8106312417729952201.post-33450973128928310812008-05-06T14:39:00.005-05:002008-05-28T13:59:02.072-05:00May 6... More ConicsWell hello friends! Today we began class with another mental math. One more to go until we get to abolish our two worst! And for us who have missed previous ones we all have a chance to make up for them when it works for us and Mr. Max... possibly tomorrow at lunch?? <div><br /><br /></div><div>Anyways after we corrected our mental math our fantabulous teacher did a homework check which was yesterdays example assignment. We went over it as a class then began learning more conics. Remember that we have two more left and then we can remove our two worst marks. There was also a discussion about a makeup time for any Mental Maths anyone may have missed. Then we began our notes for today. We're talking about sketching and analyzing graphs of conics. We got through ellipses today, and will hopefully be finished hyperbolas and parabolas by Wednesday before our <span style="font-size:130%;color:#006600;">test on Thursday.</span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL0mkQSsPd_Hmn86BnBWP0sE4_z5c8x1wHDh20wCZhBFyPQtudw83r3igIVtBiLJR-amy19Hv17z3nVgtKXydvUkce6AcGCejg5FcLW_BLmrQOmAWj4ShZFdo9DDtgEAyl-UhXubNKJmWQ/s1600-h/pc40may0508conicsellipses_1.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196971705197056578" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL0mkQSsPd_Hmn86BnBWP0sE4_z5c8x1wHDh20wCZhBFyPQtudw83r3igIVtBiLJR-amy19Hv17z3nVgtKXydvUkce6AcGCejg5FcLW_BLmrQOmAWj4ShZFdo9DDtgEAyl-UhXubNKJmWQ/s400/pc40may0508conicsellipses_1.png" border="0" /></a> So the first ellipse we talked about is when the bigger number (always '<strong>a</strong>' in our examples) is associated with the <em>x</em> values. This diagram shows where the axes and vertices are found. I think of this as a horizontal ellipse because the major axis is horizontal.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAOIUKB8sMxv23Rg6HtvyYF7LT5lqOht6o3i33bQKtBPOgv0k1lWs1u_AIxLK1e3IG4G2XhcUfHVRMDcGqGJsQm9hBGYGL5XLxtJXL_EFdpNLYm7xMRs5Zy2hpC0yFW0UeFSlRr2Fbjh48/s1600-h/pc40may0508conicsellipses_2.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196971709492023890" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAOIUKB8sMxv23Rg6HtvyYF7LT5lqOht6o3i33bQKtBPOgv0k1lWs1u_AIxLK1e3IG4G2XhcUfHVRMDcGqGJsQm9hBGYGL5XLxtJXL_EFdpNLYm7xMRs5Zy2hpC0yFW0UeFSlRr2Fbjh48/s400/pc40may0508conicsellipses_2.png" border="0" /></a> Following with that, an ellipse where the bigger value ('<strong>a</strong>') is associated with the<em> y</em> value could be called a vertical ellipse. This slide shows the equation and sketch of a vertical ellipse.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX3OIOcklEUkmND2ltiLxZOUOvFYfoqQZmzeW__POU5DZKeLIvac1fWw4e7M7CCz9tEqkQ0JYHLAtaN6jmVnKagbLIHltW3LxmBRAJ4Zqb8YvDDWQn_qk8KDFt_0vvxbR1Rz0mYfkQINP_/s1600-h/pc40may0508conicsellipses_3.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196971718081958498" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX3OIOcklEUkmND2ltiLxZOUOvFYfoqQZmzeW__POU5DZKeLIvac1fWw4e7M7CCz9tEqkQ0JYHLAtaN6jmVnKagbLIHltW3LxmBRAJ4Zqb8YvDDWQn_qk8KDFt_0vvxbR1Rz0mYfkQINP_/s400/pc40may0508conicsellipses_3.png" border="0" /></a> Here are a few examples of sketching and analyzing ellipses.</div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5nFuiJ21weuLnYgRpMAvdYRU4XDxgjOtkaz4nVsTCvrk46hoFp6SQ_CEc497EDJj7yLROQIS4JV0vBLFSo7tsI62c0Z3w50DgVaokTnHPU0Fxqb_2ui-MQfvgRgAssKmFtfwHpXBy5fgm/s1600-h/pc40may0508conicsellipses_4.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196971722376925810" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5nFuiJ21weuLnYgRpMAvdYRU4XDxgjOtkaz4nVsTCvrk46hoFp6SQ_CEc497EDJj7yLROQIS4JV0vBLFSo7tsI62c0Z3w50DgVaokTnHPU0Fxqb_2ui-MQfvgRgAssKmFtfwHpXBy5fgm/s400/pc40may0508conicsellipses_4.png" border="0" /></a> Here are the standard form equations for ellipses with all the components.
